Biography

Alan Wickman is an advocate who regularly acts in cases at the intersection of civil and criminal law.

In his civil practice, Alan is instructed in actions in the Court of Session, as well as the Sheriff Court. Leaning on his background as a criminal prosecutor, he has particular experience in historic abuse cases, where he regularly acts for the pursuer. In addition, Alan frequently appears on behalf of participants in Fatal Accident Inquiries throughout Scotland. Alan is also instructed in children’s referral proceedings, particularly where the court are considering grounds involving a criminal element, and he has represented regulators in fitness to practice proceedings.

Alan receives instructions in judicial review proceedings and has an interest in a range of public law issues, from prisons to planning.

In his criminal practice, Alan still regularly appears in the High Court and Sheriff Court, building upon his substantial litigation experience from his time as a criminal defence solicitor and prosecutor. He has continued to utilise his defence experience in white collar crime, regulatory crime and reputation management (including media law), while benefitting from his extensive prosecutorial experience conducting trials in front of a jury.

Immediately prior to devilling, Alan worked in Crown Office, where he provided advice on matters of public law to COPFS and Scottish Government officials, often in high-pressure situations where there were significant levels of media, Parliamentary and public scrutiny. Alan was the national prosecution policy lead for areas including terrorism, regulatory law, sports and military law.

Alan called to the bar in 2025 as a Faculty Scholar with an extensive background in criminal litigation and public law.
