Faculty Appeals Unit

What services do we offer?

Since 2014, Faculty Services Limited has offered a criminal appeals service provided by the Faculty Appeals Unit. The Unit act as Edinburgh agents, offering support to instructing agents and counsel with all aspects of criminal appeal work, providing advice and information, instructing counsel, ensuring all deadlines and procedural requirements are met, and attending appeal hearings.

There are many benefits to solicitors in instructing an Edinburgh agent in a criminal appeal. Being involved in appeal work every day, we have a wealth of experience of the requirements and procedures of the criminal appeal courts.

As well as appeal work, the team is happy to assist with other matters in the criminal courts, including attendance at trials and other first instance hearings or consultations alongside counsel, in Edinburgh and beyond. Being based in Parliament House, just a minute’s walk from Edinburgh High Court, means that our team is readily available to instruct counsel, often at short notice.

Instructing an Edinburgh Agent

The Faculty Appeals Unit can accept instruction only from solicitors, not direct from members of the public.

In legally aided cases, the Scottish Legal Aid Board will pay Edinburgh agents’ fees in addition to the fees of principal agents.
