Installation of Lord Mulholland

 

The former Lord Advocate and Solicitor General for Scotland, Frank Mulholland, QC, has been installed as a Senator of the College of Justice, taking the judicial title, Lord Mulholland.

The Lord President, Lord Carloway, presided over the ceremony in the First Division courtroom in Parliament House, and he said Lord Mulholland had enjoyed a distinguished career since joining the procurator fiscal service more than 30 years ago.

“You were the first procurator fiscal to be appointed directly from that role to Advocate Depute. Having been promoted to Assistant and then District Procurator Fiscal at Edinburgh, you returned to the ranks of the advocates depute, becoming Queen’s Counsel in 2005. After a period as Area PF for Lothian and Borders, you were appointed Solicitor General by the new Government in 2007 and then Lord Advocate in 2011,” said Lord Carloway.

“During all these years, you have gained considerable experience in the High Court, dealing with all the important, some very high profile, criminal cases of the day and also advising the Government in a range of civil matters – experience which will be invaluable in your new career as a Senator of the College of Justice.

“Your diligence, sincerity of approach and patience will stand you in good stead in that office. On behalf of the Court, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Scottish bench.”
