Faculty plays host to schools debating final

The Mary Erskine School emerged victorious in the final of a debating competition which the Faculty was proud to host.
The Schools’ Mace event, organised by the English-Speaking Union (ESU), is said to be the oldest and largest schools debating competition in the UK. It has been contested since 1957 and more than 600 schools take part each year.
Four teams made it through preliminary rounds to the Scottish Final, held in the Faculty’s Reading Room. The motion was: “This House believes that democracy is so good, everyone should be made to have it.” The Mary Erskine School will now represent Scotland at the International Mace Final in London.
Jess Anderson, of ESU Scotland said: “We would like to thank the Faculty for the use of their room. The magnificent surroundings lent a real sense of occasion to the event, and all the staff were incredibly helpful and made us feel really welcome. The pupils all had a fantastic time!”
