Still time to donate to the Scottish Legal Walks 2024
04 Nov
THIS year’s Scottish Legal Walks are now done and dusted but anyone keen to support the provision of pro bono legal services can still donate.
The Access to Justice Foundation organises the walks annually to raise money for much-needed pro bono services. The number of walks in Scotland grew from two in 2021 to five this year. They are open to advocates, lawyers, judges, court and tribunal staff, paralegals, support staff, legal trainees and devils, law students, and all their friends, family, and dogs.
All funds raised in Scotland stay in Scotland and are distributed by the Foundation to legal advice charities. Those who cannot join a walk can sponsor someone who can. This year 158 walkers raised more than £4,500.
“The walks were a resounding success, raising significant funds and awareness for pro bono legal services, and showcasing the incredible community spirit and dedication of participants across Scotland,” said Rebecca Samaras, Access to Justice Foundation Scotland committee member and Foundation board trustee.
“The Scottish Legal Walks serve many purposes,” said Neil Mackenzie KC, Keeper of the Advocates Library and convenor of Faculty’s Free Legal Services Unit. “One is to increase awareness of the plight of those least able to defend their legal rights. Another is to raise money to help those in need, which the Access to Justice Foundation has done to great effect over many years. Yet another is to enjoy the company of old and new friends during these walks,” he added.
The legal profession has a long history of providing free legal support to those in need. This includes the pro bono services advocates provide through the Faculty’s Free Legal Services Unit (FLSU). This was the second year that Faculty and the Law Society of Scotland joined forces to sponsor and promote the legal walks in Scotland. A reception was held in the Reading Room at the Faculty of Advocates for all who completed the Edinburgh Legal Walk this year.
“The work to help those in need continues, through the efforts of those in the pro bono sector, including the Access to Justice Foundation, the Law Society of Scotland, and, of course, Faculty’s Free Legal Services Unit,” said Mr Mackenzie.
