Law student to host fundraiser for the Lawscot Foundation

09 Oct

JOHN White, an LLB Law student at the University of Edinburgh, is organising an ‘Evening with Donald Findlay KC’ in Parliament House for later this year.

Mr Findlay will deliver a presentation on ‘Madeleine Smith – Did she or did she not?’ The case of Madeleine Smith, a 19th Century Glasgow socialite accused of poisoning her lover, has intrigued historians and legal scholars for generations.

All proceeds from ticket sales for the event will go to the Lawscot Foundation, established in 2016 to provide mentoring and financial support to academically talented students from less-advantaged backgrounds in Scotland throughout their legal education journey.

The Faculty of Advocates is among the organisations that have partnered with the Lawscot Foundation to support its aims and objectives.

“I originally come from the east end of Glasgow, and the mission of the Lawscot Foundation really resonated with me,” said Mr White. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have a great mentor outwith the foundation, but I wanted to make sure that other people from areas like mine have the chance to have a successful career in the law. Neither money nor lack of support should be a barrier to that,” he added.

The event will take place on Friday 6 December in the Laigh Hall. Tickets are £27.80, include a glass of wine and are available here.
