FROM artificial intelligence in employment tribunal proceedings to forthcoming changes to statutory time limits and the latest position on fire and rehire, the Faculty of Advocates Employment Law Group Annual Conference 2026 will explore significant developments currently shaping employment law.

The event in Edinburgh in November will bring together leading advocates and members of the judiciary for an afternoon of expert analysis, practical insight and professional discussion.

Chaired by Calum MacNeill KC, it offers a valuable opportunity to hear from specialists at the forefront of this rapidly evolving area of practice. It is open to Faculty Members, solicitors, other legal professionals and academics.

Delegates will hear from Jillian Merchant, Advocate, on interim relief in an employment tribunal, including the impact of artificial intelligence, new guidance and the limits of the remedy.

Maurice O'Carroll, Advocate, will consider indirect discrimination by association and shared disadvantage under Section 19, while Linzi McQuade, Advocate, will discuss forthcoming changes to time limits under the Employment Rights Act 1996.

Alice Stobart, Advocate, will provide an update on the current legal position regarding fire and rehire practices. The programme will also feature a session from The Right Hon. Lady Poole on the place of the Employment Tribunal and Employment Appeal Tribunal within the wider tribunal system.

Conference chair Calum MacNeill KC said: “The ELG Annual Conference has become an essential event in the calendar of any employment lawyer or aspiring one. It offers the chance to hear the latest from busy leaders in the field and, not least, to mix socially with colleagues old and new in a relaxed environment.”

The conference will be followed by a networking reception with wine and canapés, providing attendees with an opportunity to continue discussions with speakers and colleagues.

This free annual ELG event will take place from 2pm to 6pm on Thursday 12 November 2026 in the Mackenzie Building, Edinburgh. It will attract three hours of Substantive Law CPD under the Faculty of Advocates’ CPD Programme.

Places are limited and early registration is encouraged. Secure a seat by registering here.
