Faculty’s role at “Innovation Forum” on human rights
01 Dec
Members of Faculty are to line up with speakers from home and abroad at a special event to mark International Human Rights Day and the second anniversary of SNAP, Scotland’s National Action Plan for Human Rights.
The First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, will lead the way with the keynote address at the SNAP Innovation Forum, which will examine “Putting the justice into social justice: How international human rights can deliver progressive change for Scotland”.
A session to debate the pros and cons of further incorporation of human rights treaties into Scots Law will be chaired by the Dean of Faculty, James Wolffe, QC, and feature presentations by Shelagh McCall, QC, and Douglas Ross.
In another session, Mr Wolffe will explore the risks and benefits of different models of incorporation.
The event is being staged by the Scottish Government and the Scottish Human Rights Commission. They said: “Taking place to mark International Human Rights Day and SNAP’s second anniversary, this one-day Innovation Forum will provide inspiration and practical advice on models for giving effect to international human rights standards, including economic, social and cultural rights.
“Discussions will focus on how best to apply international learning to domestic policy ambitions to raise living standards through tackling poverty, reducing health inequalities and improving outcomes in education and employment.”
The Forum is on Wednesday, 9 December, at Our Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh.
