In memoriam, Ian Hamilton KC

06 Oct

It was with deep regret that Faculty learnt of the death of Ian Hamilton KC, at the age of 97.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ian Hamilton KC,” said the Dean of the Faculty of Advocates, Roddy Dunlop KC.

“Ian was a Faculty legend, renowned for his fearless advocacy and effortless bonhomie. His name will live long after his death, as the man who, whilst a student, “liberated” the Stone of Destiny; as the man who, before even calling to the Bar, addressed the Inner House as the second Petitioner in the seminal case of MacCormick v Lord Advocate 1953 S.C. 396; and as the man who thereafter was one of the greats in the Scottish criminal courts.

“Ian was a formidable advocate, a great friend to many, and a lovely man. It is thus with deep sorrow that we bid him farewell.”

Mr Hamilton’s funeral will take place on Wednesday 12 October at the village hall in Connel. The service will start at 11 am and the family has requested that no flowers be sent. A reception will be held afterwards at the Falls of Lora Hotel.
